How to Style Hanging Plants in a Moody, Collected Home

There is something about a home that feels collected rather than decorated.

The antique mirror. The brass that has aged just enough. Candlelight against the wall. A plant spilling into the reflection.

Those are the spaces I’m always drawn to.

And it’s also a huge part of why I created Hook And Vine.

For years, hanging plants have mostly been treated as plants first and design second. You find a spot near a window, put the plant into whatever hanger is available, and call it done.

But I don’t think the hanger should disappear.

I think it should belong in the room.

Let the plant become part of the architecture

One of my favorite ways to style a hanging plant is somewhere unexpected, not necessarily centered directly in front of a window.

Hang it near a mirror where the vines can become part of the reflection. Let it live beside old artwork, aged brass, wood, stone, or pieces you’ve collected over time.

Suddenly, the plant becomes another layer of the room.

The reflection in this antique mirror almost makes the plant feel twice as large, while the brass frame and candlelight pull out the deep purple and warm tones around it.

It feels a little wild.

That’s the point.

Mix living things with pieces that have history

Some of the most interesting interiors aren’t filled with perfectly matching objects.

They’re layered.

New beside old. Polished beside worn. Greenery against metal. Something handmade beside something found at an antique shop twenty years ago.

Plants work beautifully in these spaces because they add movement and life.

And your plant hanger can add another material to that mix.

That is one of the reasons I love black and brass so much. The black feels grounded and almost architectural, while the brass adds warmth without feeling overly polished.

It doesn’t scream for attention.

But it absolutely changes the way the plant feels in the room.

Your plant hanger can be part of the design

This is the idea at the center of Hook And Vine.

I originally created our patent-pending detachable top plant hanger because I was tired of wrestling plants into traditional hangers. The fixed cords made something as simple as placing or removing a pot unnecessarily difficult.

So I redesigned the way the hanger works.

Our three straps disconnect at the top, allowing the hanger to lay completely flat. You place the pot directly onto it, bring the straps around the plant, reconnect the top, and hang.

But somewhere along the way, the project became about more than functionality.

Because if something is going to live in your home every single day, why shouldn’t it also contribute to the way your home feels?

Your plants deserve better than an afterthought.

And so do your walls.

Redefine the hang.
